A Summer of Change for North West Hockey

Find out more about the changes being implemented across England to restructure hockey and how we run and develop the game at a local and area level as we start an exciting new era bringing all adult, junior, masters and officiating together under the umbrella of North West Hockey, working with our Counties in their updated roles.

The 2020-21 season has been one like no other on the pitch – but also off the pitch as a small army of volunteers and England Hockey have been working to implement the new A Structure Fit for the Future (EH - March 2021) and the eight new Areas. For the North West this means a fond farewell to the North Hockey Association and Regional Umpiring Associations as those will be replaced by the new North West and Yorkshire/ North East Hockey Areas.

The planning is almost complete, and we will be formally moving to the new structure from 1st July 2021. Clubs have already been involved in a range of consultations over the past 9 – 12 months on the changes including Junior hockey, officiating and the new league structure – with 97.5% of Clubs voting in favour of the new league structures in the North West. Clubs have also been busy completing all their playing and team information for next season to feed into England Hockey to enable the new game management system to be configured and set up for the new season.

The changes mark an exciting time for hockey and are a once in a generation opportunity to build on past work, but also reflect the changing world we live and work in to create opportunities for as many people to access and enjoy hockey at all levels, ages and abilities.

As shared by England Hockey earlier in May we really are Getting Set for a Summer of Change (EH - May 2021) as all the planning turns to implementation. One of the big changes for everyone will be the use of a single system to manage fixtures, player registration, results and the end of paper match sheets – the first phase will be delivered this summer. There will be lots of supporting communications but one of the big changes will be, similar the England Hockey Participation Agreements, everyone involved in hockey (players, coaches, officials, managers etc) will need to individually sign up to the new system from August ahead of the new season.

All change in the North West !
To help steer through the transition to the new structure and gather feedback and inputs there have been a range of volunteer working groups set up across the North West to do a lot of the leg work, with a common framework with the seven other new Areas. Counties have also been working on their future role too. Thank you to everyone who has been involved, responded to consultations and drafts and sat on the groups.

The North West Transition Working Group was chaired by Chris Reece, and made up of:
Julie Longden: England Hockey Relationship Manager
Peter McInulty: NWHL/Bebington H.C.
Shelagh Everett: Timperley H.C.
Rebecca Stamper: Cumbria
Niall Riley: Cheshire WHL/Triton H.C.

North West Hockey Ltd has now been registered at Companies House and the Transition group are assuming a shadow role until the election of the Board at the AGM. A Nominations Committee has been established to set up the new committees and is currently working through the expressions of interest received from across the Area. Thank you to everyone who has put themselves forward.

12th Dec (2018)Urinating at the side of a hockey pitch.

We are seeing an increasing number of complaints regarding urinating at the side of the pitch. As we are sure you will all agree, this behaviour is not only unpleasant but also a contravention of the EH ‘Respect – Code of Ethics and Behaviour’ – Disrepute Offence, not to mention in some cases a criminal offence. We expect all members to refrain from such behaviour. However, in the event of such incidences, in keeping with the revised Disrepute Complaint Regulations, we kindly ask that these be referred to EH as a Disrepute Complaint in the first instance. It is likely that offenders will face a suspension.
